Beginner Swimmer Program (Swim Lessons)

If you have a Beginner Swimmer who is just looking to learn how to swim then our Beginner Swimmer program is ideal for you. Our coaches will work with small groups of swimmers to first of all assess where they are with swimming and then tailor their program to best suit the needs of each swimmer. There are TWO SESSIONS for Beginner Swimmer lessons – June 4th – 22nd and June 25th – July 13th. The times for each session are listed below. When you sign up, please sign up for the Session you prefer or sign up for both sessions. BSR Members are automatically eligible for both Sessions for the one cost, but we ask that you indicate your intention to attend the session(s) you want. You can sign up today at our Swim Team/Swim Lessons website.

Our instructors evaluate swimmers to begin at the steps they feel comfortable and to work with swimmers as they progress through each new skill.  The following are example of elements of progression:

  • Able to stand in the shallow end of the pool unassisted
  • Able to get face wet and to bob up and down in the water
  • Able to enter the water, return to the side, and climb back out
  • Able to use a kick board to do the flutter kick
  • Able to float on front and back unassisted/unsupported (3-4 feet deep)
  • Able to demonstrate freestyle and backstroke (3-4 feet deep)
  • Able to tread water for 1 minute in water over their head
  • Able to demonstrate freestyle and backstroke and to try diving into 5 feet
  • Able to demonstrate dives into 5 feet
  • Able to perform all competitive style kicks
  • Able to swim each of the competitive strokes
  • Swimmers who are able to swim 25 meters in deep water have the opportunity to swim in meets with our competitive swim team

How Do I Sign Up and Register My Swimmer?

Parents, please go to our Swim Team/Swim Lessons website, look around and then register for your account.  Parents must first register for a user account, and then register your swimmers for the Beginner Swimmer session you desire, or even sign them up for both sessions.  Returning parents, just use your same username and password from last year.  This new system will replace the need for paper copies, and will be a great way for us to make your swim team experience a great one!

If you have any questions, comments or concerns please contact the Swim Chair, Tim Smith (swimming@bsrbarracudas.com).

Private Lessons

For an additional fee, BSR can also facilitate individual lessons for swimmers:

  • Who are over the age of 8 and are not ready or interested in joining the swim team
  • Who are adult swimmers
  • Who, regardless of age,  would prefer to have private lesions
  • Or anytime after the Bubblers program is over on July 15th

In order to request lessons outside of the Beginner Swimmer program, please contact us at 301-262-3349 or email us at swimming@bsrbarracudas.com.
